Five songs

What would your top 5 of the songs we listened to look like, and explain your number 1 choice.

  1. My numero uno is ,,The way we were” by Gladys Knight.
I like this song because it carries a warm, nostalgic message that feels honest and emotional. The line about these moments becoming “the good old days for our children” really stood out to me, it reminds me that even the small, everyday things we live through now can become precious memories later. There’s something comforting about the idea that today’s experiences will shape the stories and feelings the next generation remembers. Another reason I enjoyed the song is the way Gladys Knight sings it. Her voice has a soulful, sincere quality that makes the lyrics feel even more meaningful. The melody is gentle and reflective, which fits perfectly with the theme of looking back and appreciating what we had. It’s the kind of song that makes you pause, think, and feel grateful for the moments that pass quietly but stay with us forever. In the end, the song touched me because it blends emotion, nostalgia, and a beautiful message about memory and family and it does so in a heartfelt, soulful way that is easy to connect with.

  2. Thank you Aleksa! Please be sure not to use AI, the style of this paragraph is somewhat soulless and made me thing of what chatGPT would come up with, not you. I apologize if my guess is wrong. Also, please add a chart of these 5 songs - place them from number 1 to 5. Thank you.

  3. My first choice of all the beautiful songs that we listened to would be “People are people” by Depeche Mode.

This songs’s central theme is hate between people. The author has a problem in understanding why is it so spread around, when people are similar in their core, with same instincts, same tendencies and same needs. Sometimes what we can’t understand or what we don’t agree to (and my example is different cultures practices and beliefs) tends to bother us so much that we become aggressive and some individuals even get ideas of destruction (and we had the most extreme example of that nearly 80 years ago). The idea of aggression is explicitly given in this text. What is interesting here is that such rigid attitudes have deep roots in primitive and animalistic emotions such as fear from different and new. We should be more than that and be understanding. This song should be awakening for so many extremists that sadly exist even today.

  4. 1. THE ANIMALS - Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood
    2. GLADYS KNIGHT - The Way We Were
    3. OTTIS REDING - (Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay
    4. DEPECHE MODE – People are People
    5. TRAVIS – Why Does It Always Rain on Me

Out of all five, my personal favorite is “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” by The Animals. That song was originally sung by Nina Simone, and I prefer her version over The Animals’. Her version is slower, and the instrumental is so good that it makes me emotional every time I listen to it.
My interest in the song began when I was a teenager and heard a track by one of my favorite hip-hop artist, Lil Wayne, called “Misunderstood.” In that song, he used a sample from Nina Simone’s version, and I became curious, so I searched for the original. When I finally discovered it and listened to it for the first time, I had it on repeat constantly. Every time I heard it, I felt a kind of melancholia because the song has such powerful lyrics, and I really enjoy the way Nina Simone performs it. The lyrics, especially “I’m just a soul whose intentions are good, oh Lord, please don’t let me be misunderstood,” really stood out to me. We sometimes tend to feel misunderstood, we question everything: our lives, our looks, our purpose, our words, sometimes we regret certain decisions. And because music is so important to me I always find part of myself in every song that I listen, that’s why I connected to this song so strongly.
I wasn’t very familiar with The Animals’ version at first, but after I heard it, I realized it had something catchy to it. However, as I said, Simone and her voice add something truly special to the song. The Animals’ version was more popular and became a global hit, which is understandable because rock was mainstream at the time and had a larger audience.

  5. My choice of the all songs with a very deeply lessons is "People are People" by Depeche Mode.

I choice this song because that reminds me how often people create distance between each other for no real reason. It talks about how we sometimes hate, judge, or fight just because we are different. But in reality, we all feel the same — we feel pain, we want understanding, and we want to belong. The song teaches me that differences shouldn't separate us. They should help us grow and become better people. When I listened this song, I understand that it is easier to give understand than to create conflict. Its message is simple but strong: we are all human, and we should treat each other with respect, because our differences are what make us human. If we really want to divide ourselves, then the only true division should be separate someone is a good or a bad person. That is the most important division!

  6. I would definitely put People are people by Depeche mode as my number one choice, mainly because I really love Depeche mode as a band. This song describes how different people are, but in the end, everyone is put in the same category, ''People''. We are all people beside our differences and that is what makes us members of the same group. We should not fight or hate each other, because we are simply the same species. It is a very simple phrase that is what people should think before making stereotypes or making assumptions on people or hating based on race, religion, beliefs or anything else. It sends a very important message by using a very simple sentence, with no hidden meaning or metaphor. There is not a template that shows us how a person should look or act, which is great because everyone is unique and we should celebrate that by sharing love, not hate.

  7. According to my opinion, the choice was between two songs: “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” and “The Way We Were.” I heard “The Way We Were” for the first time in class, and I really liked the voice of the girl who was singing. She carried a deep emotion within her, and it simply touched me as a listener.
On the other hand, the song “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” reminded me of a song from our region, and now, after listening to it a second time, I realized that the beginning of the melody is the same as in the song “Šta si u kafu stavila” by ex-yu group Pađen Bend. That song is a hit in our region, and although I can’t say I listen to it all the time, I’ve heard it many times in my life and I really like it.
So, if I could choose these two songs as my favorites: the first one because of the emotion it awakened in me and the message it carries, and the second one because it reminds me of this song from our region that I love.

  8. My choice would also be the song "People are People" by Depeche Mode. The song asks a direct question: why do we hate each other when basically we are all the same? It talks about how easily we create divisions over things that don't matter, instead of focusing on what we have in common. For me, this is a reminder that all the differences between us are superficial, we all have the same basic needs and feelings. I like it because it carries a very simple message that we often forget: before you judge someone, remember that that person is only human, just like you.

  9. Dear Professor Andrijašević,

    Here is my assignment.

    * 1. (Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay – Otis Redding *
    2. The Way We Were – Gladys Knight
    3. Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood – The Animals
    4. Why Does It Always Rain on Me? – Travis
    5. People Are People – Depeche Mode

“Dock of the Bay” is my "number one"!

I chose this song as my top pick because it just felt the most natural and emotional to me. The melody is really calm and relaxing, but the lyrics are actually quite sad. I like that mix — it makes the song feel honest, like the way you can look fine on the outside while still feeling lost on the inside.

Otis Redding describes loneliness and the feeling that nothing is changing in such a simple way, and I think a lot of people can relate to that. Maybe that’s why the song stayed in my head even after we finished listening to it.

It’s not complicated, but that simplicity makes it feel genuine, and that’s why it ended up being my number one.

    Best regards,
    Jovana Mićanović, 1800/24

  10. My number one choice is “People are people” by Depeche Mode.
The song confronts the contradictions in human behavior ,how we can be so similar yet treat each other with prejudice, aggression, or misunderstanding. Its lyrics are straightforward but powerful, and that simplicity is exactly why it hits so hard: it’s an anthem about frustration, empathy, and the desire for the world to make more sense.

  11. Dear Professor,

I'm sorry for submitting my answer so late.

    My ranking of the songs:

    1. People are people by Depeche Mode
    2. Don't let me be misunderstood by The Animals
    3. (Sittin' on) The dock of the bay by Ottis Reading
    4. Why does it always rain on me by Travis
    5. The way we are by Gladys Knight

My favorite has to be 'People are people' by Depeche Mode. The biggest reason is that I listen to them sometimes and I really love their music. I like how quirky their approach to music can be, and how they mix different genres to achieve a unique sound. Apart from the general admiration, this song is really interesting because of its lyrics. It talks about inequality in the world, but in a direct and almost raw way. It's always a bit hard to listen to that type of music, but I think that the singer's emotions and honesty are what draw people in to keep them listening.

The other songs are really good to and I like how they differ both in genre and in the voices of artists. They are all intended for different moods definitely and expressing the same honesty and reflective questions at the same time is great. The choice of songs in general is great.

    With kind regards,
    Julija Mijušković 1809/24

  12. My ranking of the songs:

1.People Are People – Depeche Mode

2.Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood – The Animals

3.The Way We Are – Gladys Knight

4.Why Does It Always Rain on Me – Travis

5.(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay – Otis Redding

Why “People Are People” is in first place:
“People Are People” takes first place because its message feels timeless and deeply human. This song talks about human intolerance and the tendency to judge others based on differences, while also reminding us that differences are meant to bring us together, not create destruction. It feels meaningful and comforting, which is why it stands out as the most beautiful song on the list.
